Whose idea was it, anyway?

U.N. control of Web rejected

GENEVA — The United States, backed by the European Union, Japan and Canada, has turned back a bid by developing nations to place the Internet under the control of the United Nations or its member governments.

But governments, the private sector and others will be asked to establish a mechanism under U.N. auspices to study the governance of the Internet and make recommendations by 2005.

What hair-brained idea, anyway – of course it’s been rejected. Imagine government crack down and controls on the internet? It really would only provoke and motivate hackers to create the ‘underground webroad’, as it were.

The UN to govern what we write, how and when and where we express our thoughts and ideas?

Wait . . . wait – - – back up a step here . . . . .

The UN to govern ANYTHING? They don’t say ‘Ignorance is Blix’ fer nuthin’.
